Charter schools are tuition-free public schools that operate independently under a performance contract or “charter” agreement between a governing board and the local public school board. Charter schools are allowed freedom to be more innovative, while being held accountable for improved student achievement.

The School Board of Miami-Dade County currently oversees 134 charter schools spread geographically across the District. These schools enroll over 64,000 students in Kindergarten through 12th grades, representing over 18% of the District’s student enrollment.
